Water

The River Rib at Latchford Elizabeth Hamilton

At CPRE Hertfordshire we’re concerned about our water resources.

The River Rib in East Hertfordshire, shown above, is one of England’s rare chalk streams. A full chalk stream sparkling in the sun is a classic Hertfordshire scene, and aquifer-fed streams like these are rare and precious biodiversity habitats.  But our streams face many threats, including over-abstraction to supply water to our growing population, and pollution from plastics, chemicals and waste water released from over-burdened waste treatment facilities.
