Our comments on Affinity Water’s latest draft plan

8th May 2023

CPRE Hertfordshire has an abiding concern for our county’s water resources. This includes the threats to our internationally unique chalk streams posed by over-abstraction and pollution.

We recently submitted our detailed comments on Affinity Water’s Draft Water Resources Management Plan 2024.

We believe the proposals for reducing water abstraction do not go far enough and would not be implemented fast enough to reverse existing damage to our chalk streams.

We also believe the proposals for reducing the amount of water leakage are insufficient, and there should be greater efforts to reduce per capita water consumption which will in turn reduce waste water and begin to address the problem of sewerage overspills in our waterways.

Along with other CPREs in the south-eastern part of England, we remain very critical of the priority given to the proposed reservoir near Abingdon, which we believe would cause unacceptable damage to the environment of a large part of south Oxfordshire.
