Flawed Formula For Housing Need

There is need for truly affordable housing but we are being forced into planning for far more houses than are actually needed.

The Government’s proposals for calculating local housing need are based on the widely discredited premise that simply building more houses will bring prices down.

The risk is that we end up with planning permissions that more than meet actual need, as opposed to opportunistic demand. This will result in the Green Belt and countryside being lost forever, without solving the problem of providing affordable housing.

This circular walk of about 5¼ miles starts and finishes in Barkway, which is situated on the B1368 3½ miles south of Royston in the north of the county.

The route takes in the village of Reed with its Saxon church and includes a short detour to enjoy the fine views from the chalk escarpment over the flat land to the north.

There is another short detour to visit the site of a long-abandoned moated settlement, before returning across the fields to Barkway.

East Herts District Council (EHDC) draft plan, which includes taking land out of the Green Belt so that 13,500 houses can be built without trespassing on the Green Belt, comes before a planning inspector next week, starting on 3 October. If anyone is as opposed to this as CPRE Hertfordshire, this is the last chance to make your voice heard.
