State of Brownfield 2018

We have long campaigned for prioritising the use of brownfield land for housing because we believe it stops the waste of precious countryside.

This research examines new brownfield registers, published by 320 local planning authorities in England.

This short briefing sheds some light onto how self-styled ‘land promoters’ make lucrative profits by exploiting the planning system and working against local wishes.

The most effective way for you to help protect the countryside is to become a member of CPRE. We’re delighted that you want to join us. We all need the countryside – whether it’s for fresh air, delicious local produce, beautiful landscapes, or vibrant towns and villages – the countryside is invaluable. By joining CPRE, you are helping to ensure that a beautiful living countryside thrives for generations to come.

CPRE's manifesto calls on all parties in the election to recognise the countryside’s huge contribution to the economy and our sense of who we are as individuals and communities, and to develop policies that will protect and enhance rural areas.

Planning Explained

England’s planning system shapes new development and the use of land all over the country with the aim of achieving outcomes that are positive for people, the economy and the environment. This guide will help you to get involved in the development of your Local Plan - a key component of the planning system which will be the main influence on how your area changes in the future.

How to shape where you live

Neighbourhood Plans provide a great opportunity for you to have more influence on how the places in which you live and work will change over time. Your local knowledge and sense of what needs to be protected and what needs to change can really make a difference. We’ve put together eight simple steps to take if you want to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan and involve the whole community to make sure it becomes formally adopted as part of the development plan for your community.

The most effective way for you to help protect the countryside is to become a member of CPRE. We’re delighted that you want to join us.
