Hertfordshire Village of the Year 2010 is sponsored by Hertfordshire Community Foundation in association with Hertfordshire County Council, North Hertfordshire District Council & Hertfordshire Mercury The competition recognises, rewards and encourages vibrant village communities. It is judged in four categories: Environment, People, Business and Communications. Villages can enter as many, or as few, categories as they wish. Each category carries a prize. One of the major prize-winners, Village of the Year East, Village of the Year North or Village of the Year West is chosen as the overall Hertfordshire Village of the Year.
Who is the Village of the Year Competition for? Any village, can enter the competition - quality rather than quantity is what counts, although there is a population limit, 6,000 (nb the upper limit has increased from 2010). Any interested organisations, or individuals, can enter their village - but check with the Clerk to the Parish Council first, to avoid duplication of effort.
What's in it for my village?
Recognition of the value of village life £100 plus a commemorative plaque for category winners £250 plus a village trophy each for the Hertfordshire Village of the Year East (cash prize donated by The Mercury), North (sponsored by North Hertfordshire District Council) and West. The opportunity to health-check your village. What are you doing well? What could you be doing better? The chance to learn from other villages - and share what you have learned with them - about making the most of opportunities and overcoming problems.
